Center Stage was founded in January, 2002 in Davenport, IA. It began as a small dance studio, and has grown to provide training in all disciplines of the performing arts, including dance, theatre, and voice for the Quad City region. Instruction is provided for youth through adults. Center Stage provides jobs for local artists and instructors. It provides a performance outlet for both the professional staff, as well as the students. A new venue is currently in the plans. This venue will offer performance opportunities for students and staff of Center Stage, and would also be available for local arts and performance groups. By combining these various activities under one roof, links between the different disciplines are being created. This produces a well-rounded student and life-long learners. Center Stage contributes to the economic development and improved quality of life for the Quad City region.
Long-term goals will focus on growth and development for the student population and the community. Center Stage plans to provide full time employment for larger groups of artists, instructors, and support personnel. Plans include the creation of a formal theatre space. Long-range plans include recognition regionally and nationally as an out-standing arts training facility and performance company. These plans also include the establishment of a nationally recognized summer training program. Center Stage plans to be fiscally sound, with the potential for continued growth.
By offering a full spectrum of classes in all the major performing arts disciplines this facility provides a necessary service for the community. Students have the opportunity to learn, integrate their knowledge of arts disciplines and apply that knowledge in performance within one facility. Students are allowed to perform in a variety of capacities that are not available in the Quad Cities at this time. For example, a Center Stage student has the opportunity take classes in theatre, dance, and voice and then combine these disciplines in a musical theatre production. Another example is a student of playwriting or choreography creating a piece that is performed by other students of Center Stage.
Center Stage regularly brings in professionals from outside the area to offer master classes. It encourages the development and production of new professional works. There is no facility currently in existence in this region which offers the diversity of opportunities that are offered by Center Stage Performing Arts Academy. Center Stage gives youth a place to be and offers activities that promote self-esteem, tolerance, language skills, academic achievement, and positive peer-interaction.
